João Basílio Pereima, a volunteer sailing instructor and Sea Scout leader in Antonina, Brazil, describes building the Grupo Escoteiro do Mar Antonina from near-nothing in 2015 into a program that teaches sailing, environmental education, and boat maintenance to 40 children, with plans to expand to 80–100 after securing a dedicated space inside the Porto Público de Antonina through negotiations with Portos do Paraná, the municipal government, and the Brazilian Navy.11:06 Children as young as seven train on Optimist dinghies; the program also received a donated 25 HP outboard motor and a public-tender lot of 10 Hobie Cats and 10 Lasers, many needing repair, which the young scouts are restoring in their own workshop.13:32 The group operates entirely on volunteer labor and donations.9:35 A centerpiece of the program is a former drug-seizure sailboat confiscated near Fernando de Noronha, which completed a 1,600-nautical-mile delivery voyage from Natal to Paranaguá with roughly 300 rotating participants aboard; after a year of legal proceedings to clear the vessel's name, it now serves as a dedicated school boat with its own pier at the Paranaguá Sea Scout base, available to scout groups across Brazil.39:39 A coastal cruise to the Itajaí, Joinville, and São Francisco do Sul region is planned for 2024.51:13
