Placing a boat in a charter fleet can offset ownership costs, but requires treating the vessel as a legitimate business to satisfy IRS requirements for depreciation and expense deductions.4:20 Over seven years, the owner of Some Tuesday utilized a Southern California charter program that focused on local family groups rather than high-turnover vacation rentals.4:04 This "charter light" model resulted in less wear and tear than typical Caribbean operations, as the boat primarily went out for three- to four-day weekends with experienced skippers.10:54 Charter revenue covered most annual ownership costs, though the owner remained responsible for insurance deductibles and minor maintenance.9:36 A recent accident at Farnsworth Bank near Catalina Island, where a charter customer fouled the anchor in 70 feet of water, caused significant damage.0:58 The owner chose to pay for repairs out-of-pocket rather than filing an insurance claim to avoid complications before an upcoming circumnavigation.13:56 Successful chartering depends on selecting a reputable management company that rigorously vets sailing resumes and limits access to qualified members.5:49
