Kate and Curtis, sailing the vessel Sweet Ruca, departed Puerto Montt, Chile, to begin a passage across the Pacific Ocean toward French Polynesia.2:55 The crew anchored overnight in the small fishing town of Puerto Webtau to time their transit of Canal Chacao, a 20-mile channel known for currents reaching nine knots and dangerous standing waves caused by wind-against-current conditions.4:37 Upon exiting the channel, the crew encountered choppy, confused seas and strong currents before reaching the open Pacific.10:16 They maintained a speed of approximately 7.5 knots with 15 knots of breeze on the stern quarter.11:42 The boat utilized new carbon sails from Evolution and ropes supplied by Marlo Ropes, while the hull remained protected by International Paints and AkzoNobel bottom paint.6:28 Despite favorable initial conditions, the crew faced shifting winds that deviated from their weather forecast, forcing a reevaluation of their routing strategy.14:18
