Securing a vessel to shore with a stern line—a technique known as *cima a terra*—allows for anchoring in narrow coves or crowded anchorages where swinging at anchor is not possible.1:13 The maneuver requires a long, elastic line, which should be deployed by a crew member on land before the boat reverses toward the shore to retrieve it.1:33 To ensure safety and visibility, attach multiple fenders along the line using clove hitches to prevent other vessels from fouling their propellers on the submerged rope.9:45 Before committing to this mooring, verify that local harbor master ordinances permit the practice.10:18 Once secured, test the setup by gently engaging the engine in forward gear to tension the shore line, then in reverse to ensure the anchor is set.8:34 If a thunderstorm or unstable wind conditions arise, abandon the shore line immediately to avoid collision, as the boat will be unable to swing with shifting winds.13:23
