Brett and Jade Evans discover extensive hidden mold behind the forward cabin cabinets of their boat after weeks of unexplained symptoms — congestion, headaches, poor sleep, and puffy eyes — that cleared up every time they left the boat.1:09 The mold traced back to severe condensation during their first weeks in a cold climate, when water dripped from walls and hatches daily before they learned, from Sailing Uma, to crack a hatch and run a dehumidifier.3:18 Removing the cabinet panels reveals a thick furry layer of black mold covering the wood, fiberglass, and wiring behind them.2:37 The remediation process: remove cabinet panels, scrub surfaces with vinegar and water, then run an ozone machine in the sealed, unoccupied forward cabin for one to two hours, followed by several hours of airing out before re-entry.32:32 Brett explains ozone chemistry — lightning breaks O2 into single oxygen atoms that bond to form O3, killing biological organisms — and notes the machine runs on 220V, requiring an adapter.23:01 A small dehumidifier running continuously, emptied every two to three days, had already been controlling ongoing moisture.25:19 After one night post-treatment, both report sleeping well and the cabin smelling clean.32:45 Cracking a hatch and running a dehumidifier from the start in cold, humid climates prevents the condensation buildup that allows hidden mold to establish behind fixed cabinetry.
