Giethoorn, a village in the Netherlands situated one foot below sea level, features a network of canals created by historical peat mining rather than traditional road construction. The village remains largely car-free, relying on footpaths and electric rental boats for transit. Visitors navigate approximately 180 bridges connecting residential islands, which were originally formed as miners extracted peat for fuel. The area is surrounded by a large bog, and the village name reportedly derives from the discovery of goat horns by early settlers. While the village hosts nearly one million tourists annually, the local population remains under 2,800. Staying overnight allows visitors to experience the canals during quiet morning and evening hours, avoiding the peak daytime crowds. During winter, the shallow canals often freeze, allowing for ice skating throughout the village. Public transportation connects the village to Amsterdam, though service frequency decreases significantly after 6 p.m.
