A delivery crew aboard a Hallberg-Rassy 50 plans a transit from A Coruña to Gibraltar while mitigating the risk of orca interactions.Watch To avoid potential encounters, the crew intends to steer clear of the shallow inshore waters where fishing nets and orcas are frequently reported.0:52 Instead, they will maintain a course in deep water, exceeding 1,000 meters, and follow shipping lanes through the Strait of Gibraltar.1:19 The crew utilizes the dedicated orca interaction app to monitor recent sightings and track movement patterns.4:08 If an interaction occurs, the established protocol requires dropping sails, stopping the engine, disengaging the autopilot, and removing hands from the wheel to minimize boat movement during violent contact.4:37 Sailors should report incidents to the Coast Guard on VHF channel 16 for the Finisterre area, channel 69 for the Tangier area, or channel 10 near Tarifa.4:58 The crew emphasizes that using deterrents like pingers or bangers is discouraged, as orcas are an endangered species.5:31
