Marco, a Sail Canada cruising instructor, demonstrates the technique for securing a vessel to a mooring buoy using both a primary mooring line and a redundant lazy line.Watch When approaching a buoy, the helm must maintain a stationary position alongside the buoy to allow a crew member on the bow to thread the line through the mooring ring.1:11 For single-handed operations, the helm brings the buoy alongside the cockpit, threads the line, and then moves forward to secure it to a deck cleat.1:36 To prevent chafing failures, Marco rigs a second, slack lazy line as a safety measure, securing it to a separate deck cleat.1:39 He recommends leading both lines outboard of the pushpit and flaking them on deck to prevent tangles.2:01 By running one line from each side of the bow through the ring and back to its respective cleat, the crew can quickly slip the lines for an emergency departure.5:43 A redundant lazy line prevents vessel loss if the primary line chafes through.4:30
