The McIntyre Ocean Globe Race starts from Cowes, England, in light and drizzly conditions, with roughly 20 boats crossing a nearly one-mile-long start line bound for Cape Town — approximately 6,000 to 7,000 miles away.2:40 Don McIntyre, race organiser and sponsor, provides on-water commentary alongside Brian Hancock, a Whitbread veteran, and others aboard a spectator boat.0:59 The fleet includes named entries Galliana, Penduic, Explorer, Triana, Spirit of Helsinki, Maiden, and White Shadow.24:50 Start procedure runs under collision regulations rather than standard racing rules; any boat crossing early receives an automatic six-hour time penalty and continues sailing without performing a penalty turn.17:36 The course requires all boats to leave the Needles to port.18:04 Triana suffers a spinnaker wrap at the gun but clears it; Explorer makes one of the best starts; Spirit of Helsinki sets a spinnaker and moves quickly.26:09 Boats that stayed inshore and held off on spinnakers gain an early advantage as offshore wind proves lighter.29:07 Penduic, the largest boat in the fleet, struggles on the northern end of the line.29:36 A wind shift clears the rain and fills in just after the start.12:05
