Jeremy Bagshaw, a competitor in the 2022/23 McIntyre Golden Globe Race, recounts his experience sailing the 36-foot yacht *Oleana* solo around the world. Throughout the circumnavigation, Bagshaw battled persistent hull fouling, specifically gooseneck barnacles and blue mussels that significantly degraded boat speed.13:45 He performed multiple underwater cleanings near the Cape Verde Islands, Ilha da Trindade, and Tristan da Cunha, eventually stopping in Simon's Town, South Africa, for an extensive hull scrub.14:14 Despite these efforts, the growth returned, forcing him to manage the vessel's performance while navigating the Southern Ocean.16:42 Bagshaw also dealt with heavy weather, including 35-to-40-knot winds that destroyed his spray dodger and flooded the chart table and electrical panel.24:00 He relied on celestial navigation and sextants, finding the process a necessary distraction during long, isolated stretches.4:42 The final 1,000 miles from the Azores to the finish line proved the most difficult, as consistent headwinds and rig damage extended his transit time to 24 days.27:37 Frequent hull cleaning is essential for maintaining speed in long-distance solo races.
