Mads and Ava prepare their boat, Athena, for a haul-out in Trinidad by completing several maintenance and modification projects. To protect the Rainman watermaker’s RO membranes during their absence, Mads pickles the system using a food-grade sodium metabisulfate solution mixed at a ratio of 10 liters of water to 3 scoops of powder.2:36 They install a 12,000 BTU 220V window air conditioning unit to manage heat while the boat sits on the hard, constructing a custom plywood box to seal the unit into the hatch and using pool noodles for a deck-to-hood seal.7:59 To secure the boat, they install a custom 316 stainless steel striker plate and a locking mechanism on their companionway doors.12:56 During the haul-out process, the yard uses a travel lift and jack stands to secure the vessel.10:59 Inspection of the hull reveals no blistering, confirming the effectiveness of their previous osmosis treatment, though the Vetus exhaust through-hulls show significant corrosion.11:24
