Cruising from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas requires specific administrative and logistical preparations, including Mexican fishing licenses, conservation passes, and temporary import permits (TIP) for the vessel. Sailors should obtain fishing licenses and boat insurance through organizations like Discover Baja or Baja Bound before departure.2:41 Upon arrival, each crew member must secure a six-month FMM visa at a port captain’s office.3:32 When applying for a TIP, owners must register all high-value items, including dinghies, outboard motors, and tools, to avoid future customs issues.4:30
Fuel consumption for the Pacific coast passage totaled 83 gallons of diesel, with prices averaging $6 per gallon.8:00 While Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas offer marina slips, the coastline between them consists primarily of free anchorages.14:32 Safety recommendations include carrying 300 feet of anchor chain and extra engine maintenance supplies, such as filters and fluids, to mitigate risks from contaminated fuel.19:36 Budgeting for the trip should account for mandatory documentation fees, fuel, and potential marina costs in major ports, while recognizing that inland dining and activities offer significant savings over waterfront tourist areas.23:38
