Sailing the Erie Canal westbound, Alex and Cory aboard their boat strike a submerged log cluster near Little Falls, New York.12:00 Alex spots what appears to be a single floating tree but the debris field extends well below the surface; the boat grounds hard, with the depth meter dropping under two feet and logs crunching against the keel.13:57 Cory reverses slowly, lifting the stern enough to clear a second, higher log, and the boat backs free.13:45 Alex considers deploying a kedge anchor before the boat breaks loose.14:03 Slow speed limits the damage to likely bottom-paint scratches.14:21 The crew anchors for the night at Little Falls Marina, paying one dollar per foot — their first paid marina stop on the canal.15:24 There they collect a pre-shipped Mantus anchor, replacing a CQR that had been failing to hold; the Mantus comes with a swivel and Alex plans to dive for it rather than abandon it if it ever sets too hard.16:59 The transit is roughly halfway through the locks, with more locks concentrated on the eastern side of the canal.6:51 The day begins with a visit to Fort Stanwyck in the City of Rome, a free historic site the crew had visited four years earlier.0:06 Moving slowly through debris-heavy canal water reduces grounding damage and preserves the option to reverse off.14:14
