Jan Attenstedt and Nigel Calder discuss the feasibility of using lead-acid batteries for electric propulsion systems.0:10 Calder notes that while lead-acid batteries can power electric motors, the weight and capacity limitations make them impractical for most cruising applications. In 2008, Calder utilized a 144-volt system consisting of 12 thin-plate pure lead AGM batteries, totaling nearly half a ton in weight to achieve 14 kilowatt-hours of storage.0:56 He explains that lead-acid batteries suffer from significant voltage sag when discharged beyond 50 percent capacity.1:40 For AGM batteries, a discharge and recharge rate of 0.5C is possible up to approximately 60 to 70 percent state of charge, though sustained cycling at these rates causes the batteries to overheat rapidly.2:16 While lead-acid setups may suffice for short-duration maneuvers like entering or leaving a slip, lithium-ion packs offer superior energy density and performance.3:02 Calder concludes that lead-acid propulsion remains unviable for 99 percent of cruising sailors due to the excessive mass required to match the performance of modern lithium-ion systems.3:13
