Since 2020, interactions between Iberian orcas and sailboats have become a recurring concern for recreational sailors along the Atlantic coast, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Galicia.5:06 These encounters frequently involve orcas targeting and damaging rudders, which has led to over 500 reported incidents and the occasional sinking of vessels.8:18 Experts from the Grupo de Trabajo de Orcas Ibéricas suggest these behaviors may stem from juvenile orcas playing or learning to hunt bluefin tuna, as the rudder’s movement mimics the tuna’s tail.22:56 Recommended protocols during an encounter include stopping the engine, dropping sails, disengaging the autopilot, and leaving the helm centered to minimize the orcas' interest.17:13 Navigating within two miles of the coast or in shallow water may offer some protection, as the animals generally avoid these areas.17:13 Sailors are encouraged to photograph orcas during sightings to help researchers identify individuals through their unique white markings.23:21 While some theories attribute the behavior to environmental stressors or illness, the primary consensus remains that these interactions are a learned, transient social behavior.
