Joshua constructed a 40-foot boat shelter in the woods of eastern Canada for $225, utilizing birch trees for the frame and a large tarp for the cover.0:13 To build the gothic-arch structure, he harvested flexible birch trees, notched the tops, and lashed them together using a tension-based rope-twisting technique.7:13 He reinforced the frame with diagonal bracing made from invasive Glossy Buckthorn and installed a ridge pole spaced at 8-foot intervals.14:18 To secure the tarp, he initially attempted to sew webbing into the material but eventually switched to using tarp clips and leather-working rivets for efficiency.19:28 He lined the birch frame with strips of old blankets to prevent chafing against the tarp and secured the cover using trucker’s hitches to allow for adjustable ventilation.22:25 The structure withstood 90 km/h winds and heavy snow accumulation throughout the winter.4:54
