The owners of a cruising sailboat undergo a major refit in Chiapas, Mexico, to address systemic plumbing, ventilation, and structural issues. The project includes replacing all forward plumbing lines, installing a new composting toilet, and replacing corroded water tank and head vents that previously caused tank pressurization. To improve cockpit utility and deck space, the crew removes the mizzenmast, converting the vessel from a ketch to a cutter rig. The owner manages deck leaks by identifying and sealing holes left by previous teak deck fasteners, requiring a full sanding and fiberglass reinforcement of the deck. Additionally, the crew installs two independent cockpit drains to prevent standing water during heavy rains. While stripping the mizzen boom, the owner discovers and rescues two swallow chicks from a nest. The refit continues with interior ceiling demolition to address mold and water intrusion, with plans to replace panels with PVC. The owner completes the forward plumbing and cockpit drainage before departing for a short trip to Guatemala.
