Renovating a home after years of living aboard a boat presents unique challenges, primarily due to the time-consuming nature of DIY projects and the difficulty of managing construction around a 15-month-old child. Matt and Kristen, who previously lived off-grid and refitted their boat, Good, Bad, and Ugly, underestimated the labor required for large-scale drywall installation and the learning curve associated with custom cabinetry. They advise against hiring a buyer’s agent when purchasing property, citing accountability issues and unnecessary costs, and recommend working directly with the seller’s agent instead.1:57 The couple also notes that attempting to renovate multiple rooms simultaneously to avoid repeated tool setup created an unmanageable construction zone, which hindered their ability to film and maintain a safe environment for their daughter.9:29 They suggest tackling renovations room-by-room to preserve sanity and living space.10:12 Additionally, they caution that relying on the sale of other assets, such as a boat or off-grid property, to fund a renovation can lead to budget shortfalls if those sales are delayed.12:43
