Modifying the engine beds on a Sabre Targa 34 to accommodate a Yanmar 3J40 diesel-electric hybrid system requires widening the mounting footprint and raising the bed height. The original engine bed, designed for a Yanmar 3YM, measured 300 millimeters wide, but the new hybrid configuration requires 350 millimeters at the rear and 395 millimeters at the forward section to clear the PRM 150 gearbox and hybrid bracketry. The new engine mounts sit approximately 2.75 inches higher than the previous setup to align with the prop shaft. To achieve this, the existing fiberglass and foam structure must be cut out and rebuilt using additional board and six layers of 12-ounce glass. Vacuum bagging the laminate will simplify the process and ensure a clean finish. Meanwhile, the interior engine bays are being faired using Tollboft epoxy fairing compound, with blue Dykem dye mixed with denatured alcohol serving as a guide coat to identify low spots and ensure a smooth surface before priming.
