Pioli replaces the degraded, cracked acrylic companionway doors on his 1971 Dufour Arpege 30 with custom-built Iroko wood panels.9:31 To prevent the wood from warping or "cupping," the builder alternated the grain direction of the boards and reinforced the assembly with through-bolt fasteners featuring long-nut inserts, which provide superior clamping force compared to standard wood screws.5:11 The Iroko was reclaimed from a bar floor and finished with marine varnish to provide UV protection and a high-gloss aesthetic.2:59 Pioli also installs a removable wooden bench seat designed to fit in the cockpit, allowing for a forward-facing seating position while using the autopilot.12:10 The project aims to restore a classic appearance to the vessel while improving ventilation and visibility.7:57 The companionway doors fit into the existing tracks after precise measurement, and the new bench stows below deck when not in use.11:14
