A couple living aboard their boat in Indian Town, Florida, weathered Hurricane Irma in September 2017 by remaining at the marina rather than evacuating to a shelter. Despite initial forecasts predicting 95-mph winds, the area experienced sustained winds of approximately 50 mph with sporadic gusts.3:16 The vessel remained secured at the dock, though the crew noted the boat heeled significantly due to windage on the mast.9:00 Post-storm, the marina experienced flooding that submerged docks by two to two-and-a-half feet, requiring the crew to jump between neighboring boats to reach land.9:50 Damage to the yard was minimal, limited to a shredded furling sail and several loose tarps.12:11 Marina staff and neighbors actively monitored and adjusted dock lines and jack stands for boats throughout the storm, preventing significant structural issues.12:30 The marina lost power for three to four days following the event.14:52 The crew concluded that the location provided effective protection against the storm's path.16:23
