The 30-foot sailboat Gekko undergoes a deep cleaning and reorganization at Townsville Marina in Australia before being left unattended for three months. The owner clears out all lockers, washes mold-prone surfaces, and stores the dinghy engine in the quarter berth to prepare for the Australian summer and cyclone season. The vessel is left in the care of a local resident, Andy, and his two sons, who monitor the boat during the owner's absence. Prior to this layup, the crew sails from Townsville to Magnetic Island, anchoring in Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay, and explores the ruins of a leper colony on Fantome Island.1:09 Navigation is aided by Navionics, while the crew manages light-wind sailing conditions and shallow, mooring-heavy anchorages. The owner selects Townsville Yacht Club and Marina for its affordability and protection against cyclonic weather.
