Johan and Malin of RAN Sailing spent 2023 constructing the hull of their custom boat, beginning with the positioning of 22 temporary frames based on 3D drawings.0:53 They sourced Western Red Cedar timber from a private barn to build the hull, supplementing it with mahogany and teak for the future interior.3:56 The construction process required milling roughly three kilometers of wooden strips using a large ripping saw and a second-hand planer, followed by months of planking that concluded in September.4:26 To accommodate the boat's length, they extended their barn and built a specialized pad for the upcoming hull flip.6:37 The final months of the year focused on laminating the hull with fiberglass and epoxy, a process they managed in a climate-controlled environment.8:29 Plans for 2024 include fairing and sanding the hull, flipping the vessel, and beginning the interior layout and systems installation.12:48 The most challenging aspects of the year were the repetitive planking process and the high-stakes learning curve of lamination, while the most rewarding milestone was completing the hull planking.9:04
