Joshua constructs a freestanding 10-foot-tall wooden tower to serve as a stable staircase platform for a 32-foot wooden sailboat undergoing restoration in the woods of eastern Canada. To support the structure, he utilizes four spruce logs salvaged from fallen trees as vertical legs, bracing them with 2x6 lumber and temporary strapping.3:21 He secures the platform frame using 4-inch galvanized spikes driven into pre-drilled holes.9:58 Because local sawmills could not supply 2x12 lumber for long stringers, he designs a two-stage staircase featuring a lower landing to accommodate the steep incline and avoid a nearby red oak tree.18:26 He determines the total rise of the stairs by using a laser level from the platform to the ground.19:13 Throughout the four-day project, he manages frequent snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, eventually replacing temporary strapping with 2x4 bracing to increase structural rigidity.15:32 He plans to install the stair stringers and treads in a subsequent phase.
