Plastic bolt-cover screw caps, purchased as a mixed-size set from Amazon, are Vlad's low-cost fix for exposed steel bolts rusting on Mirage.1:19 The caps press onto bolt heads throughout the boat — on the mast and in every storage compartment — and have held in place for six months without falling off.0:30 Vlad reports no new rust at any capped location.1:14 For bolts already showing rust before capping, he applies a rust-converter liquid with a brush, waits ten minutes, then wipes the area clean.2:05 The two-step approach — treat existing rust with the converter, then cap the bolt to prevent recurrence — is presented as applicable to any sailboat with exposed steel fasteners.1:43
