The Hylas 63 Shaima cruises the northern coast of New Zealand’s North Island during December 2022. The crew visits the Poor Knights Islands, noting the landscape, before sailing to the Mokohinau Islands. Because the anchorages at the Mokohinau Islands lack protection, the vessel proceeds to Great Barrier Island for an overnight stay. While at Great Barrier Island, the crew observes grey reef sharks in the water. The voyage continues to Waiheke Island and then to Auckland, where the vessel enters Westhaven Marina, described as the largest marina in the Southern Hemisphere. The itinerary also includes a stop at Kawau Island. During a land excursion, the crew hikes for approximately two hours through a cave system featuring a river and glowworms, noting that the entrance carries a warning regarding potential inundation during heavy rain.
