Claire, Max, and their companion Angie arrive in Huaraz, Peru, to begin a series of high-altitude treks in the Cordillera Blanca.0:11 After an initial acclimatization hike to Laguna Rocotuyoc and Laguna Conjérada, the group prepares for the ascent to Laguna 69. They depart at 3,900 meters and climb 700 meters of elevation over a 7-kilometer trail to reach the lake at 4,600 meters. To mitigate altitude sickness, the hikers chew coca leaves throughout the trek. The route involves steep sections and thin air, requiring a slow, steady pace and frequent breathing breaks. After reaching the summit and viewing the lake, the group descends for approximately two hours to meet their bus for an overnight transit to Lima. The hikers emphasize that the primary challenge of the trek is the lack of oxygen at high altitude rather than the technical difficulty of the terrain.
