Weekly check-in calls between GGR race control host Georgie and several GGR 2026 skippers approximately two to three weeks into the race, with the fleet sailing downwind toward Lanzarote and Cape Verde. Ertan reports sailing at 6.6 knots roughly 100 miles from Lanzarote and admits his early strategy left him isolated from the fleet, likely costing him ground; he runs five alarms — including three kitchen timers and a mechanical pocket clock — to manage sleep as a heavy sleeper.6:53 Damien Guillou reports 15–17 knots of favorable wind near Cape Verde, steering clear of the islands to avoid wind shadow.9:25 Guido, sailing Hannah of Cows, describes a turning point three to four days before Lanzarote where he shifted from racing hard and under-sleeping to a sustainable pace; fresh stores include palm ham, apples, eggs, lemons, and parmesan.19:26 Mara reports good conditions and waking from a single bright alarm, relying on noise changes rather than multiple timers.29:49 Pat Lawless, heading for Cape Verde on twin jibs and main, making 5–6 knots in rolly downwind conditions, has no weather routing and plans to ask passing ships for forecasts; he notes a flying fish struck him in the head at night.34:08 All skippers report maintaining VHF and HF buddy calls with nearby competitors.22:21
