Don McIntyre, founder of the Ocean Globe Race (OGR), Golden Globe Race (GGR), and Mini Globe Race (MGR), returns to Andy Schell's On The Wind podcast for a wide-ranging conversation recorded over Zoom after the two met in Lagos, Portugal, at the start of the MGR.1:58 McIntyre traces his philosophy of adventure from selling hand-drawn Jimi Hendrix posters at age 13 and teddy bears door-to-door after school, through a jewellery apprenticeship, to funding expeditions including a year overwintering in Antarctica and a 28-day solo Atlantic crossing in a 580 in 2021.35:40 Halfway through that Atlantic passage he identified the core motivation behind a lifetime of expeditions: proving things to himself, not to anyone else.16:12 He defines adventure as any activity with an unknown outcome — including starting a business or raising children — and argues success is entirely internal, making failure by definition impossible.24:32 He discusses how he funds his events, handles critics of his races, and why he decided at 50 to shift from personal achievement toward giving back, including speaking at 150 schools for free after Antarctica.17:01 The conversation also covers the bonds formed between solo sailors who share a race, and how adventure in the natural world creates perspective unavailable in domestic life.19:25
