The crew of the 66-foot Ex-Fonde Globe Open sailing yacht NV became entangled in a large commercial fishing net while sailing at 10 knots in the Arafura Sea.1:09 The vessel’s 4.5-meter bulb keel snagged the net during a night passage, causing the boat to stop abruptly.1:09 The crew initially attempted to lift the net to the bow to cut it, fearing the gear might foul the rudder or propeller.10:25 They used dive torches for visibility and prepared cutting tools, including large shears, while attempting to communicate with the nearby fishing vessel via radio and light signals.3:38 After failing to lift the entire section, the crew discovered the bulb had already torn a large hole in the netting.18:05 They cut the remaining top floating line and a small portion of the mesh, which allowed the boat to drift free.18:11 The crew avoided further conflict with the fishermen by confirming the net remained largely intact.20:20
