A 12-volt Caframo cabin fan failed due to worn-out carbon brushes in its RS555SH-20120 brushed DC motor.1:40 To repair the unit, the crew attempted to replace the motor with a brushless DC outrunner motor, specifically a DC 2830 model with a 750 KV rating, typically used in drones.6:44 This brushless motor requires a three-phase DC speed controller and a potentiometer to manage speed and torque.7:53 While the brushless conversion successfully moved significant air at 0.8 amps, the project proved less cost-effective than simply replacing the original motor or its brushes.10:21 The brushless motor also caused the fan blades to flex at high speeds, reducing overall efficiency.12:23 After several weeks of testing, the crew concluded that the most practical long-term solution for cabin ventilation is using standard computer fans, which offer comparable airflow at a lower cost and complexity.12:46
