Mainsail and boom trimmed centerline on open water
Hva denne videoen dekker
The mainsail traveler, or traveler, serves as the primary control for positioning the boom when sailing close-hauled, a task the mainsheet can no longer perform effectively in those conditions.9:51 While the mainsheet’s fundamental role is to orient the sail to the wind, its function shifts toward controlling leech tension and sail twist as the boom approaches the boat's centerline.2:15 When sailing close-hauled, excessive mainsheet tension pulls the boom downward rather than inward, which risks over-tensioning the leech and distorting the sail's shape.7:47 By moving the traveler car to windward, a sailor can position the boom toward the centerline without altering the leech tension or twist established by the mainsheet.10:36 The boom must never cross the centerline, as this creates a backward force component that acts as a brake rather than a propulsive force.10:59 Before executing tacks or jibes, the traveler must be returned to the center position to ensure proper sail handling during the maneuver.14:48
