The host replaces the corroded 7mm galvanized anchor chain on his sailboat with a 7mm stainless steel chain sourced from Campo Mar.8:25 The previous galvanized chain degraded in less than two years, prompting the switch to stainless steel for its durability and resistance to rust.8:02 The new chain’s smooth surface prevents it from bunching in the anchor locker, which previously caused the windlass to jam.10:45 During the installation, the host adds an articulated anchor swivel to prevent the chain from twisting during rotation.11:26 He also performs a splice to connect the chain to 70 meters of anchor rode.13:10 Additionally, the host tests his AIS reception using a temporary quarter-wave VHF antenna to troubleshoot poor signal range.13:31 Outside of maintenance, the host visits a sea turtle nesting site in Santo André, discusses the importance of biodiversity conservation, and travels to Porto Seguro to take his Capitão Amador exam.16:40
