Modifying engine beds for a Sabre Targa 34 requires distinct finishing strategies for the port and starboard hulls. The port hull, designated for a diesel-electric hybrid system, requires structural modifications to the stringers to accommodate a larger engine and custom mounts for the hybrid gearbox. Because this area will be finished with gel coat for durability, the crew uses polyester fairing compound to smooth the surfaces. Incomplete curing of the polyester compound in high temperatures necessitates scraping away sticky, uncured material and reapplying thicker layers catalyzed with MEKP to ensure a proper set.
The starboard owner’s hull, housing an electric motor, features a more accessible layout and will be finished with Alex Seal 501 Top Coat Paint. The crew prepares these surfaces using Total Fair Epoxy Faring Compound followed by Alex Seal primer. Applying primer in sections allows for movement within the tight engine compartment while the paint dries. Using a guide coat helps identify low spots in the fiberglass, which are then filled and sanded to achieve a level finish.
