Marine watermakers use reverse osmosis to convert seawater into potable water, but they require consistent operation and maintenance to prevent biological growth and membrane damage. Systems like those from Rainman, Spectra, and Schenker operate at high pressures and demand regular use—often weekly in temperate climates or every few days in the tropics—to remain functional. If left idle, the system must be "pickled" with a preservative solution to protect the membrane. While many modern units feature automatic freshwater flushing, these systems require careful installation, including activated carbon filters to remove chlorine, which can permanently damage membranes. Power consumption varies significantly between conventional AC-powered systems and energy-recovery models; for example, the Schenker Zen 50 consumes 240 watts to produce 13 gallons per hour, whereas larger AC units may require over 1,000 watts. Manufacturers advise against operating in harbors or polluted waters to avoid fouling filters and membranes with sediment or oil. Proper care can extend membrane life to 5–10 years, but owners must verify the availability of proprietary parts and control boards before relying on older, pre-installed equipment.
