Jeff Cote of Pacific Yacht Systems upgraded his boat's external alternator regulator to the Wakespeed WS500 Pro with Bluetooth to gain real-time monitoring and configuration capabilities. The Bluetooth app allows users to set custom temperature thresholds for the alternator, which Cote lowered from the default 100 degrees Celsius to 90 degrees Celsius to prevent overheating during extended motoring sessions. The regulator automatically pulls back on alternator output as it approaches this limit. Additionally, the app enables custom load profiles based on engine RPM, allowing the user to reduce alternator load at low idle speeds and at wide-open throttle to protect the engine. While underway, the app displays live data including field drive percentage, alternator and regulator temperatures, and voltage at both the alternator and the battery bank. This granular control and visibility provide a significant advantage for managing high-output charging systems. The Bluetooth-enabled model offers superior diagnostic and customization features compared to non-Bluetooth versions.
