The 37-foot sailboat Florence transits 100 miles from Pāvilosta, Latvia, to an Estonian marina to avoid a forecast of 30-knot northerly winds. The crew initially planned to anchor near Estonian islands but shifted their route after a late-night weather forecast update necessitated a protected harbor. During the passage, the crew shakes two reefs out of the mainsail while running downwind by rounding up into the breeze on the staysail to relieve pressure on the mast track slides. Upon arrival, the vessel navigates a narrow, shallow channel to reach a marina near a 15th-century fortress. Later, the crew anchors in three meters of water over a sandy bottom between islands during a period of calm wind. The Baltic coast features long, sandy beaches with limited natural harbors, forcing reliance on marinas in shallow, rocky areas. Frequent weather changes in the region require repeated route planning to maintain shelter from prevailing winds.
