A crew of four sailing a 7-meter sloop, the *Buenos Aires*, experiences multiple mechanical failures and severe weather during a coastal passage from Punta del Este to Colonia, Uruguay. After departing Punta del Este, the crew encounters a broken forestay, which forces them to use a halyard to support the mast and manage the headsail. Upon reaching the approach to Colonia, the engine fails and the headsail furler jams, leaving the vessel struggling in heavy seas and high winds. The crew manages to restart the engine and reach the harbor, but the boat remains in a compromised state. Facing a forecast of gale-force winds, the crew decides to remain in Colonia rather than attempt the final leg to Buenos Aires. One crew member stays aboard the boat to monitor it during the storm, while the others seek shelter in a hotel. The passage highlights the risks of operating a small vessel with aging rigging and unreliable mechanical systems in unpredictable river and coastal conditions.
