The crew of the Open 66 *NV* hauled their vessel out in Kudat, North Borneo, to replace the engine and sail drive.Watch During the removal of the old Volvo MD2040C engine, the team discovered severe corrosion in a steel exhaust pipe extension hidden within the boat's bulkhead.14:36 This hidden failure posed a significant risk of water ingress into the bilge, which could have caused the boat to sink if the pipe had ruptured while at sea.15:16 To prevent future back-pressure issues and improve safety, the crew is upgrading the exhaust system from a 60mm to a 90mm diameter pipe and increasing the water lock capacity from 15 to 20 liters.18:09 The refit also involves grinding out the existing stern through-hull to accommodate the larger exhaust diameter.16:07 The project highlights the importance of inspecting exhaust components that pass through inaccessible structural areas, as these sections are prone to oxidation and moisture-related decay.
