Andy completes the installation of a new windlass on his Catalina 30, Solé, by trimming the mounting bolts and sealing the base with butyl tape.3:43 To prevent thread damage during the trim, he threads a nut onto each bolt before cutting approximately 3/8-inch off with a bandsaw.2:18 He performs a sea trial at Island White in 33 feet of water, deploying 100 feet of chain and 30 feet of rode.5:40 During the test, he uses the motor to lower the anchor rather than the free-fall feature.4:54 When retrieving the anchor, the chain experiences minor jumping and "castling" in the locker, but the windlass successfully hauls the ground tackle without tripping the breaker.10:28 The installation provides a significant improvement over manual retrieval.10:29
