Brazil is expanding its scientific and geopolitical focus from the Antarctic to the Arctic, driven by the global climate impacts of rapid Arctic ice melt.1:30 The Brazilian government, supported by the scientific community, is transitioning the existing Antarctic program into a broader Polar Program, with approximately 20% of research funding now shifting toward Arctic initiatives.2:12 In 2022, Brazil conducted its first government-supported exploratory mission to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago.6:59 The country is currently evaluating the 1920 Svalbard Treaty to formalize its recognition of Norwegian sovereignty in the region.7:16 During the 11th Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland, a multidisciplinary Brazilian delegation presented on topics including polar geopolitics, climate change, and the parallels between Arctic Sami populations and Brazilian indigenous groups.11:45 Researchers also highlighted the "third pole" concept, noting that Andean glaciers are critical water sources for the Amazon basin and are currently experiencing rapid, destabilizing melt.10:42
