Before leaving, they address a mechanical failure on the boom caused by light-wind sailing during the passage from mainland Spain.7:20 The mainsail’s constant flapping loosened screws on the boom’s bearing system, causing the back plate rivets to shear.8:15 Further inspection revealed a broken screw head on the slider assembly connecting the boom to the mast.9:08 The stainless steel pin had corroded against the aluminum housing, requiring WD-40 and a hammer to extract.9:25 Nike drilled out the broken screw, modified a replacement bolt with an angle grinder to fit the housing, and secured the assembly with Loctite.10:17 The repair restores the boom’s structural integrity for future sailing.
