Steph and Travis sell their second sailboat, Gypsy, completing a long-delayed transaction before departing on a 400-nautical-mile passage northeast from Virginia to Martha's Vineyard aboard Jibsea. The departure itself required timing a high-tide exit through a narrow channel in the dark with an inch or two of clearance under the keel. The four-day passage was largely light-air downwind sailing — 7 knots of wind at 150–170 degrees — with Travis alternating between the code zero and spinnaker to maintain speed. Fog arrived offshore and thickened as they approached land. A large offshore wind farm forced a two-hour detour at 2 a.m. to go around rather than through the turbines, confirmed on radar. Pre-departure boat work included adding a fourth solar panel to reach 1,550 watts total, installing a new used furler, rebuilding the windlass with new oil seals and bearings after it failed in the BVI, and routing a new radar cable through a spare halyard sheave and inside a stripped rope casing. On arrival at Martha's Vineyard, they anchored at Vineyard Haven, explored Oak Bluffs on the free bus, ate clam chowder, and visited Trinity Park's 300-plus 19th-century Methodist gingerbread cottages. Navigating a new cruising ground after a year of familiar waters meant relearning tides and currents from scratch.
