A diesel engine runs hot by design, but when the temperature climbs past its working range, the cooling system has already failed somewhere upstream. The announcement varies—steam in the exhaust, an alarm, smoke in the bilge, or simply no water coming out the side—but the hunt that follows moves through the same circuit, component by component, until the blockage or break shows itself.

Impellers

The most common impeller failure is broken blades, which reduces raw water flow and lets the engine overheat. The symptom arrives as steam in the exhaust or no water discharging overboard. Sailing Parlay Revival lost engine power in a storm and found many fins missing from the impeller, then searched the system for the fragments to prevent downstream blockages. 10:22 Keeldragger found two blades completely detached and others ready to break, which explained the steam in the exhaust. 12:22 Crews diagnose this by pulling the pump cover and inspecting the impeller directly. Sailing With Phoenix | Oliver, replacing an impeller, noted a significant difference in fin count between the old and new parts, underscoring the need for careful comparison. 5:12 Installation technique matters: Maruzza's Horizons greased the housing and rotated the shaft clockwise to walk the new impeller into place. 12:41 The critical lesson is accounting for every missing piece. Fragments travel downstream into the heat exchanger and other narrow passages, turning a simple impeller failure into a system-wide blockage. An impeller that comes out whole moves the hunt downstream.

Strainers

Crews consistently find that a reduction or cessation of cooling water flow is the primary indicator of a strainer issue, often leading to engine or generator overheating. Sailing Parlay Revival, for instance, noted no water exiting the boat and suspected an intake blockage 9:15. Similarly, Sailing Doodles observed their air conditioner ceasing to cool and found it was no longer discharging water 1:32.

The typical culprit is debris or marine growth obstructing the strainer basket or the seacock itself. Sailing Doodles discovered their seacock was barely dribbling water into the strainer, indicating a blockage at the intake 1:51. The Lazy Geckos™ checked their generator's strainer for debris after it overheated, though they found none in that instance 0:30.

Crews routinely address these issues by inspecting and cleaning the strainer baskets. Sailing Doodles cleaned algae growth from their air conditioner's strainer basket when it stopped cooling 1:32. When a blockage is suspected further down the line, crews have attempted to clear it by blowing back through the system; Sailing Parlay Revival used a hose to blow back through the intake after removing the strainer 9:15.

Heat Exchangers

Weed and shell do their damage before the pump ever sees them, but impeller fragments and calcium scale accumulate inside the heat exchanger itself, where seawater cools the engine coolant through a bundle of narrow tubes. Alfredo Contaldo emphasized that a broken impeller demands attention to the heat exchanger, as fragments lodge there and block flow. 1:47 SmoCo Sailing, despite their engine running well, removed their heat exchanger due to calcium buildup and sent it for professional cleaning. 6:31

Crews typically disassemble the unit to extract the tube bundle, a process Alfredo Contaldo demonstrated by removing headers, gaskets, and O-rings. 11:50 After cleaning, he planned to replace all gaskets and O-rings to ensure a proper seal. 12:37 Salt & Tar disassembled and cleaned their heat exchanger manifold in preparation for a new unit. 10:05 While some crews, like Ale & Max - Y2K Sailing Adventure, prefer professional oversight for significant engine work, others undertake the cleaning and overhaul themselves.

Exhaust & Mixing Elbows

The same symptom arrives from the other end of the circuit, and it arrives more slowly. The exhaust mixing elbow, where raw seawater combines with engine exhaust, corrodes from the inside, restricting flow and trapping heat. BoatHowTo consulted Nigel Calder, who emphasized the elbow's role in injecting raw seawater into the exhaust. 1:20 Crews have observed that manufacturers' recommendations for elbow replacement can be based on worst-case scenarios to protect the manufacturer, but neglecting this component has serious consequences. Diagnosis involves inspecting the elbow for blockages or leaks. Alfredo Contaldo demonstrated removing the exhaust riser from the manifold by unscrewing four bolts, making inspection accessible. 7:02 Untide installed a repaired exhaust elbow on their generator, highlighting its function in mixing coolant water with exhaust before discharge. 9:57 The Mariner considered a compromised exhaust as a potential cause for engine stoppage, wondering if water ingress from waves could lead to hydraulic lock. 0:49 Sampson Boat Co serviced and cleaned the heat exchanger as part of regular scheduled maintenance. 14:41

Thermostats

Thermostats regulate engine temperature, but their failure can lead to overheating or, less commonly, an engine running too cool. Normal operating temperatures vary widely between engines—some running cool, others hot, with one Volvo Penta D275 operating near boiling point at 93°C 1:25—so a sudden change in temperature or unexpected behavior points to a thermostat issue.

Wildling Sailing experienced pipes popping off and exploding when their engine ran at high revs, leading them to suspect a thermostat issue. 21:53 The Sailing Brothers encountered an outboard engine not passing enough water, prompting them to investigate a potentially blocked thermostat by removing its cover. 11:20 Sam Holmes Sailing ran the engine for a couple of minutes after it overheated before shutting it down, later wishing they had turned it off sooner, and needed to let it cool and refill fluids while determining the cause of the overheating. 11:14

Crews often physically access the thermostat for inspection. Salt & Tar planned to drain fluid and remove the thermostat housing after their engine sat with saltwater internally. 4:41 Ale & Max – Y2K Sailing Adventure, after installing an O-ring, proceeded to check the thermostat as part of their engine overhaul. 12:25

Diagnosing Overheating

Overheating announces itself through alarms and smoke in the bilge, as Sam Holmes Sailing experienced after turning off their engine. 10:24 A common outcome is the engine entering derate mode, which left 45 Degrees Sailing drifting. 4:54 Keeldragger observed steam in the exhaust even when their engine ran cool, indicating a less obvious issue. 7:46

The fleet traced most overheating to the raw water cooling system. Keeldragger ultimately found a clogged heat exchanger and a raw water pump impeller with two missing blades. 12:22 The heat exchanger uses colder seawater to cool engine coolant, and modern diesels incorporate complex systems like diesel exhaust fluid and diesel particulate filters, which rely on exhaust gas coolers that utilize engine coolant, as discussed by The Sailing Doodles Podcast. 4:00 The Sailing Doodles crew reported that the generator motor controller was getting too hot to touch and was shutting the generator down despite having a coolant pump for it. 7:59
