A diesel engine runs hot by design, but when the temperature climbs past its working range, the cooling system has already failed somewhere upstream. The announcement varies—steam in the exhaust, an alarm, smoke in the bilge, or simply no water coming out the side—but the hunt that follows moves through the same circuit, component by component, until the blockage or break shows itself.

Impellers
The most common impeller failure is broken blades, which reduces raw water flow and lets the engine overheat. The symptom arrives as steam in the exhaust or no water discharging overboard. Strainers
Crews consistently find that a reduction or cessation of cooling water flow is the primary indicator of a strainer issue, often leading to engine or generator overheating. Sailing Parlay Revival, for instance, noted no water exiting the boat and suspected an intake blockage 9:15. Similarly, Sailing Doodles observed their air conditioner ceasing to cool and found it was no longer discharging water 1:32.
The typical culprit is debris or marine growth obstructing the strainer basket or the seacock itself. Sailing Doodles discovered their seacock was barely dribbling water into the strainer, indicating a blockage at the intake 1:51. The Lazy Geckos™ checked their generator's strainer for debris after it overheated, though they found none in that instance 0:30.
Crews routinely address these issues by inspecting and cleaning the strainer baskets. Sailing Doodles cleaned algae growth from their air conditioner's strainer basket when it stopped cooling 1:32. When a blockage is suspected further down the line, crews have attempted to clear it by blowing back through the system; Sailing Parlay Revival used a hose to blow back through the intake after removing the strainer 9:15.

Thermostats
Thermostats regulate engine temperature, but their failure can lead to overheating or, less commonly, an engine running too cool. Normal operating temperatures vary widely between engines—some running cool, others hot, with one Volvo Penta D275 operating near boiling point at 93°C 1:25—so a sudden change in temperature or unexpected behavior points to a thermostat issue.
Wildling Sailing experienced pipes popping off and exploding when their engine ran at high revs, leading them to suspect a thermostat issue. 21:53 The Sailing Brothers encountered an outboard engine not passing enough water, prompting them to investigate a potentially blocked thermostat by removing its cover. 11:20 Sam Holmes Sailing ran the engine for a couple of minutes after it overheated before shutting it down, later wishing they had turned it off sooner, and needed to let it cool and refill fluids while determining the cause of the overheating. 11:14
