Starlink has rebranded its mobile internet service from the RV plan to the Roam plan, introducing new terms of service that impact sailboat users.6:00 The Roam plan costs $150 monthly for regional coverage or $200 for global access, with a $250 equipment fee for the standard dish.7:20 While the service remains functional for many cruisers, the updated terms explicitly prohibit offshore use and operation while in motion.7:32 Additionally, the plan now includes a 50-gigabyte data cap, after which users may experience deprioritized speeds.7:32 Although the standard dish currently functions on slow-moving sailboats, Starlink reserves the ability to restrict service for vessels exceeding certain speeds.10:33 Users requiring consistent, high-speed connectivity while underway are directed toward the maritime plan, which requires a $2,500 high-performance dish and a $250 monthly subscription.7:07 Meanwhile, a developing partnership between Starlink and T-Mobile aims to provide satellite-based text and voice connectivity for mobile phones, potentially offering an additional safety layer for offshore emergencies.11:25
