The resulting public pressure and legal scrutiny forced the company to abandon the project, though the local town, which relied on the refinery for employment, retaliated against Yrvind. The stress of the conflict and the loss of his research facility contributed to the end of his marriage. Yrvind maintains that his actions were necessary to uphold his personal values.
