The owners of a 35-foot sailboat, Santana, installed a DIY Octopus Water Maker kit to achieve self-sufficiency in remote anchorages.1:16 The system uses a high-pressure pump to produce 60 liters of fresh water per hour.2:37 Initial installation errors included poor heat management, inadequate electrical capacity, and air intake issues caused by using an existing, poorly positioned through-hull fitting.6:15 The crew initially used an air-cooled Kärcher K2 pressure washer, which failed due to overheating and improper orientation.7:13 They replaced it with a water-cooled Kärcher K4, which functions regardless of orientation and requires no external airflow.7:59 To prevent galvanic corrosion in the K4’s metal components, the crew performs a daily automated fresh water flush.12:23 They now operate the system in 30-minute intervals during peak solar production to avoid high-amperage battery drain.12:18 Proper pre-pressurization of the intake line prevents air bubbles from damaging the membrane.10:38
