Alexandros Retsinas demonstrates two techniques for correcting the most common helm error sailors make when maneuvering short-keel or shallow-draft sailboats in reverse: fighting prop walk with full rudder deflection instead of working with it.
The first error shown is applying full starboard rudder in reverse to counteract prop walk pulling the stern to port.0:33 With the rudder hard over, the propeller cannot accelerate the boat, so the rudder has no water flow to act on and the stern swings the wrong way.0:52 The correct technique is to keep the rudder centered, apply a firm burst of reverse throttle to build dead-slow speed, and only then steer — letting the propeller and rudder cooperate rather than oppose each other.1:40
The second technique, which Retsinas calls the "45-degree method," pre-positions the stern up to 45–90 degrees from the target berth using a forward burst with full port rudder, then centers the rudder and engages reverse.3:45 With the stern already aimed correctly, prop walk drives it precisely into position. The core principle: the propeller provides speed; the rudder provides maneuverability; without speed, rudder input is wasted.4:39
