The crew of the 45-ft sailboat Sweet Ruca, currently stationed in Majuro, Marshall Islands, transported their damaged Genoa to a sail loft in Chicago for professional repair.3:40 After completing an 1,800-mile passage from American Samoa, the crew identified a failed top seam on the sail, which had accumulated over 12,000 miles of wear.17:41 Host Kate flew the sail as checked baggage through Honolulu and Los Angeles to Chicago, where technicians at 180 Sails disassembled the luff tape, foam luff, and UV cover to access the damaged area.18:06 The repair process involved gluing the seam, allowing it to cure overnight, and applying reinforcement stitching across the seam and other areas showing signs of chafe.18:32 The sail was then reassembled with the original components.18:37 While the sail underwent maintenance, Kate visited family in Illinois for the holidays before returning to the Marshall Islands.19:38
